This practical, applied course will introduce basic data analysis concepts and methods, with application to the experimental biological sciences. Emphasis will be on the application of basic data analysis techniques; developing statistical intuition & the ability to interpret results; familiarity with situations in which advanced analytic skills may be needed; the ability to critically review statistical analysis presented in relevant manuscripts; and the ability to clearly describe the results of statistical calculations when writing papers and grant applications. At the end of this course, you should able to: (a) use statistical reasoning to formulate scientific questions in quantitative terms; (b) apply fundamental probability concepts to understand random variations & trends in laboratory data; (c) select appropriate data–analysis methods and justify the choice; (d) use statistical software to explore data, implement basic analyses, and present results; (e) critically evaluate the results and communicate them to peers.
